Building vault

Upload your building's drawings, then give your vendors a digital key to the sheets they need. Keys are view-only, watermarked with the vendor's name, expire on a date you choose, and you can revoke one at any time. Every view is logged.

Preview with sample data. Nothing is uploaded, stored or sent, and the keys below do not open anything.

Ownership is checked against the city's deed record before you can upload.

Keys are never for sale. There is no price on a key, and owners cannot resell, license or charge for their drawings through BuildNYC or outside it. The design professional of record is credited on each sheet. They own the copyright in their drawings by default; you hold the right to use them for your building.

How keys are enforced

  • Tied to one person. A key opens only after the vendor signs in with the email it was issued to and accepts the viewing terms. Forwarding the link does not work.
  • Three strikes. Three tries by anyone else revoke the key and notify you.
  • Watermarked and logged. Every page carries the vendor's name and the time. Every open, page view and blocked attempt is recorded.
  • If a key is misused. We revoke it and, for a confirmed breach, close the vendor's account. If an owner sells or charges for drawings or access, we close the owner's vault and may remove their contributions and credit. Contributors are responsible for losses caused by breaking these terms.
  • You can end access any time. Revoking a key takes effect immediately. Pages already viewed cannot be taken back, which is why every page is watermarked.

Full terms for the building vault (draft, pending legal review)

A draft for a New York attorney to revise, not final legal text. Nothing here is accepted yet.

Owner waiver

  1. Ownership. I own, or am authorized to act for the owner of, this building. I may give my own vendors view-only access to its drawings for work on the building.
  2. Right to share. My agreements with the design professionals, contractors and anyone else do not forbid this, and sharing breaks no confidentiality duty or license.
  3. No resale. I will not sell, license, rent or charge for the drawings or for access to them, through BuildNYC or outside it. I will not give a key to anyone but the vendor named on it.
  4. Design professional's rights. I understand the design professional of record usually owns the copyright in the drawings. I am responsible for any permission needed from them. They are credited on each sheet.
  5. Sensitive information. I will hide or exclude security-system, vault and critical-infrastructure details. BuildNYC may remove a sheet that appears to contain them.
  6. What BuildNYC does. Stores the drawings privately, shows them only through view-only watermarked keys that I issue, and reads them for facts only if I allow it. BuildNYC does not publish, sell or show them to anyone else.
  7. Release and indemnity. I release BuildNYC from claims arising from access I authorized, as far as the law allows. If my statements here are untrue and BuildNYC faces a claim because of it, I will cover its reasonable costs.
  8. Withdrawal. I may delete a drawing or revoke a key at any time. Pages already viewed cannot be taken back.

Vendor viewing terms (what the vendor accepts before a key opens)

  1. I am the person named on the key and signed in with the email it was issued to. I will not forward the key or the page.
  2. I may view the sheets listed for the purpose stated, for the owner's building only.
  3. View only. I will not download, print, photograph, screenshot for others, copy, trace, redraw, resell or use the drawings for any other project, and I will not use them to train software.
  4. My name and the time appear on every page, and every open, page view and attempt is logged.
  5. The drawings are confidential. I will not share what I see except with people at my firm who need it for the stated work.
  6. I will not alter, re-seal or file the drawings. I understand they may be hidden in part for security and may be out of date.
  7. The key ends on its expiry date or when the owner revokes it, and my access ends immediately.
  8. If I break these terms, my key is revoked, my account may be closed, and I am responsible for losses I cause.
